Zombies invade Stowe: Horror movie filmed at Ten Acres Lodge

Posted: Thursday, March 24, 2011 2:00 pm | Updated: 1:54 pm, Thu Mar 31, 2011.

By Lisa McCormack

Stowe played host to a group of unusual visitors last week. Hundreds of zombies showed up at Ten Acres Lodge. They weren't there to enjoy the country breakfasts and cozy rooms; they were extras in "Blood Lodge," the latest horror movie by Graffiti Playhouse Productions. The New Jersey-based independent film company, founded in 2007, recently produced "Pembrook," a psychological thriller. Jason Koerner, a producer, director, writer, actor and part-owner of the New Jersey-based independent film company, describes "Pembrook" as "a mix between Alfred Hitchcock and Stephen King."

"There are things in it that have never been done on film," Koerner said. "There are certain key scenes — like the scene in the 'Exorcist' where the girl's head spins around — that will leave an imprint on everyone's mind." Koerner stayed at Ten Acres Lodge in 1997 when he came to Stowe for a wedding. When he was handed the script for "Blood Lodge," he knew that the Stowe location would be a perfect setting. He started working with owner Frank Wilson in September to plan the filming schedule.

Here's the plot: A group of people from the New Jersey area come to Stowe to go skiing, but they find the town has been taken over by zombies. Koerner and his production crew cast the major roles in the film before coming to Stowe, but held an open casting call for zombies once they arrived. They advertised in local and college newspapers, and about 200 zombie wannabes showed up March 14 for the first day of filming. "It was a real nice turnout," Koerner said. "We had people from all over Vermont and people who drove out from Massachusetts and Maine. When you're making a zombie movie, the more zombies, the better."

He was amazed by the locals who stopped by to offer assistance during filming, which happened mostly at night and wrapped up March 18. "The town has been very helpful," Koerner said. "They are the kindest, nicest people I've met in a long time. Being around decent folks who will do anything to help you out has been a gift."
He estimates the film's production costs at $200,000.

"We spent $100,000 on equipment alone," Koerner said. "It's not 'Avatar,' but we're a new company. Our sponsors have been fantastic. We're just happy to have the opportunity."

Koerner expects the film-editing process to take a while because his crew used a number of high-tech cameras to capture multiple angles in each scene. He'd like to have the movie wrapped up later this summer so he can start pitching it to national independent and corporate film distributors. He's confident it will generate a lot of interest. "It's not your average zombie movie," Koerner said. "We took it up a notch."
